Most Exploratory classes last for one semester—August-December, or January-June. Some run the entire school year; such as PE or Choir.
Exploratory classes offered to 6th graders at Slavens:
Physical Education (required class which also requires a PE uniform)
STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math lab. Learn to solve a problem using multiple skills and strategies.
Keyboarding (If you did not pass in 5th grade or want to improve beyond 20 GWAM)
Tech I & II: in depth study of Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Photoshop sites, Canva etc.
Art
Musical Theater: similar to elementary drama
Guitar: learn to play this instrument and perform various times
Choir: all year class geared toward voice and performance
Stage Craft: semester class that works behind the scenes for the play in Musical Theater—make costumes, construct sets
Band: Advanced class is offered to those that participated in 4th and/or 5th grade. Beginning class is offered to those that are new to the program or would like to try a new instrument.
Anatomy: Study of the human body and group project to build a replica of the human body systems
Mathletics: competitive math class where you learn to solve math problems quickly and compete against other DPS schools
**Student Assistant: help teachers and younger students
Study Skills: independent study time
Creative Writing
Stock Market: Learn how to buy and sell within the stock market
STEAM: Art is included within the STEM class
Semantics: Spelling Bee preparation
Math and/or Literacy interventions: may request or it may be required, depending on CMAS/PARCC scores or teacher recommendation
**Yearbook: Create the actual yearbook that students buy as a keepsake for the school year.
**Newspaper: Design, report, get advertisers, print, take pictures, etc. for the school newspaper
