The results of the 2009 Parent Satisfaction Survey will help principals, teachers, and parents improve your child's school. Parent feedback is very important to us and will be used in the School Performance Framework (SPF) to help assess how well your child's school is serving students.
Please complete this survey by May 1, 2009. To complete the survey, click here.
Slavens families will have the opportunity to take the 2009 DPS Parent Satisfaction survey online. The district is piloting the online survey this spring with just five schools. The goal is to make taking the survey more convenient for our families and to increase response rates. Response rates and results from this year's survey will be factored into our School Performance Framework rating and, as in previous years, your feedback will impact our School Improvement Planning process.
Here is what you need to know about our schools participation in the online pilot:
The online survey will be available April 6 - May 1st. Families must complete the survey by May 1st. Similarly, if you choose to take the paper version of the survey it must be submitted to our school or postmarked by May 1st in order to be counted.
If you have any questions about our schools' participation in the online pilot of the 2009 Parent Satisfaction Survey, please contact the school.
This meeting -- open to all community members -- is to share background on the proposed Center for Early Education at Merrill and the process for considering whether to locate the center at Knight. It is also to collect thoughts and feedback from members of the community regarding the potential move.
When and where: Thurs. April 2, 6:30 - 8:00 PM, Merrill Middle School Library, 1551 S. Monroe St.

Promethean White Board Technology Comes to Slavens. Thanks to a generous donation to FOSS!
Soon Slavens teachers and students will experience the cutting-edge technology of interactive white boards in the classroom. This opportunity was made possible by a large designated contribution to FOSS to help expand technology opportunities at Slavens.
Four Promethean Interactive White Boards will be installed by the end of January: three in eighth-grade classrooms, and one in a fifth-grade classroom. These classes were selected based on teacher input and a willingness to put in 30 to 40 hours of professional development. Teachers will receive training on how to use the new boards, thanks to Mary Ann Hogsett, a former Slavens parent and a Promethean Trainer.
The touch-sensitive boards allow teachers and students to interact with an image on the board, whether it be text, pictures or video. Auditory learners benefit from activities that might include listening to music, speech repetition or poetry recitation - all illustrated on the board.
In addition, students can physically interact with the board by writing and manipulating answers directly on it; and by using a unique software program, teachers can assess how well the students are understanding the material. Promethean Interactive Whiteboards create a motivating classroom, engage students and positively impact their learning.
Kurt Siebold, Slavens Principal commented, "We believe the Promethean Interactive Whiteboards will enrich the learning environment in these classes, and we look forward to adding more of these boards as time and resources permit."
If funding is made possible, Slavens hopes to purchase more of these boards in the future. A demonstration night will be held in the Fall for parents to come see this unique technology in action. Denver Public Schools (DPS) is pleased to announce the new Center for Early Education at Merrill Community Campus, located at 1551 S. Monroe St. (the "Center"). This new tuition-based early learning concept for children aged 4 and 5 will open its doors for the 2009/2010 school year.
The Center is a collaborative effort between the Cory, Asbury, Steele, Slavens and Merrill schools. This innovative center will provide children from the Southeast Denver area with a dedicated early learning environment. The Center will operate under a yet to-be appointed Director that will lead a team of highly trained and experienced teachers towards the sole goal of creating a unique learning experience for children. Tuition rates will be the same as other tuition rates throughout DPS. Tuition assistance will be available based on need.
As a participating preschool in the Denver Preschool Program, the Center will be a Qualistar rated program. Qualistar accreditation is based on the principles of a positive learning environment, strong parent involvement, low student-to-teacher ratios and highly trained instructors. This dedicated learning center will focus on the social and academic skills necessary for future educational success. The Center will promote oral language development, stimulate cognitive development and provide a rich, emergent literacy environment and develop a child's self-esteem and love of learning. The Center will also emphasize a strong connection to the arts, music and technology. The Center will offer half-day and full-day programs.
DPS is now accepting applications. Interested families can pick-up an application beginning January 5, 2009 at the following participating schools:
On-line applications can be downloaded at: http://earlyeducation.dpsk12.org.
