Slavens Master Plan -- Update
At a community meeting at Slavens on November 1, 2011 the plans for phase I of our school’s renovation were presented. Architect Anne Weber presented the plans (see November 1, 2011 Community Meeting presentation slides).
Here are the highlights of the Phase I project:
- Building addition includes: new Cafeteria & Kitchen, new Music/Drama Classroom, 2 new general classrooms (11,843 GSF)
- Renovation of the Auditorium into a Media Center, and renovation of the existing media center into one classroom and one special education room on the 2nd Floor (4,434 SF)
- Renovation of the existing Cafeteria/Kitchen into 3 general classrooms (2,902 SF)
The construction contractor for this project will be G.H. Phipps Construction Companies. You can expect to see construction fencing going up during the holiday break in December. We are planning a groundbreaking of this phase I project sometime in mid-January.
As you are aware, DPS has identified overcrowding issues at Slavens due to demographic changes in the neighborhood. With the goal of addressing capacity needs, and the functionality and sustainability of existing space, Slavens engaged in a process under the Bond program to identify a comprehensive approach to address present and anticipated future needs. The Bond Program Office, under the DPS Facility Management Division, started a master planning effort in February 2011 to review and set a schedule for needed improvements for Slavens K-8.
The implementation of phase I of the master plan is funded by the 2008 General Obligation Bond Program passed by the voters in November 2008. Future phases of our school’s master plan will be considered in the anticipated 2012 Bond Initiative, which will have an extensive public input process and is scheduled to commence in January 2012.

Enrolling Your Child In a DPS School: DPS SchoolChoice
Any student planning to attend a new school in the 2012-13 school year, including those entering ECE, elementary, middle or high school for the first time, should complete a DPS SchoolChoice form. The SchoolChoice form is the one-and-only school application that needs to be completed for all DPS traditional boundary schools, magnet schools and programs, and charter schools.

Important Winter Weather Info
The decision to keep schools open or to close them during winter-weather conditions is made with one overriding factor in mind: the well-being of our students and their families. Our schools serve tens of thousands of children who come from low-income households. Schools are not only vital places of learning for those students, but they also provide nutrition, health care, counseling and support services. Whenever possible, DPS strives to keep schools open during extreme weather conditions. Detailed DPS winter weather and snow day information, including information on how families can find out if school is closed, can be found on the DPS website.
Superintendent and Parent Forum
The purpose of the forum is to:
- Provide an opportunity for direct dialogue between parents of DPS students and the superintendent
- Broaden communication to the schools' parent community
- Empower Parent Forum members to share and disseminate information from the forum to their school's principal, CSC and parent groups
Early Childhood Education
Slavens offers Early Childhood Education classes for 3 and 4 year olds off-site. As one of six schools at the Center for Early Education at Knight located at 3245 E. Exposition Ave. 80209, we are fortunate to have our youngest learners in a center focused on their needs. Please see their website for more information: centerforearlyed.dpsk12.org or call: 720-424-6503.
