Final PTA Meeting Of The Year! - will be next Monday, May 12th at 6:00 pm at Kary Cramer's house at 3103 S. Milwaukee Street. There will be a light agenda followed by a celebration of all the hard work and success accomplished by the PTA this year. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. It will be casual and a perfect opportunity to learn about ways to get involved in next year's PTA.

Peace Action Club Meeting - The Peace Action Club will be hosting its final meeting of the year on Tuesday, May 13th! Be sure to join us at 7:15 AM in the library. We had a fabulous year and will talk about our successes this year and what we hope to accomplish next year. Don't forget the ACTION - this Saturday at Overland Pond Park.

CSC Meeting - Tuesday May 13, 2008 at 3:15 pm. in the library. Sitters will be available at $5/family. Please request by email tamara.barron@comcast.net.

Spring Grounds Clean-Up - If you would like to help the Slavens Girl Scout and Brownie Troops clean up the grounds around the school this spring, come join us on May 14th from 3 - 5pm. Refreshments and trash bags will be provided and all are welcome. We'll meet in the back of the school after the bell rings at 3pm. For those adults who wish to help, we need some extra rakes and gloves. Thanks for your support in keeping our school grounds looking green and trash-free.

Boxtops for Education - Now is the final time to gather any Boxtops for Education you have at home. Please trim and bag them (in 50s if you have that many) and bring them to the Boxtops Box on the mailboxes across from the office by May 15. Thanks to your effort, we've raised over $1100 for Slavens School this year!

Food & Nutrition Services - In order to close out books for the school year and compile financial reports for Food & Nutrition Services, it is necessary that all charges with the lunchroom manager be settled by Friday, May 23rd. No charges may be made after that date.

Black Jack Pizza Day - Tuesday, May 27, the lunchroom will be serving Black Jack Pizza.

Books For Summer Break - Parents may drop off slightly loved/used books the week of May 12th - 16th. Please no drop offs before this time being as there is not enough storage in the office or library. I will also take KIDS Magazines that are in very good order (Sports Ill. Kids, Nick, American Girl) Please NO National Geographics, Seventeens or Cosmo. These are books and magazines that will be out for 5 - 15 year olds to see - please consider this! I can also not have board books our children are well beyond this! Then the children may bring 25 cents to a couple dollars to purchase books for summer reading J. This will be during their normal library time.

Slavens 2007-2008 Yearbook - I've had several calls from parents wondering if it is too late to buy a yearbook. ABSOLUTELY NOT! You can still get your orders into the office. They have extra forms if you need them. Remember to write your checks to Slavens PTA.

Cheers To The Slavens Community For Making The 4th Annual Denver Rubber Duck Drop A Huge Success! - We actually sold out of all 3,000 ducks for the first time ever! Congratulations to the Kindergarteners who will receive a Pizza Party to celebrate their sales of 218 ducks! Congratulations to Ethan Craighead-Dankenbring for winning the drawing for the Wii! Thank you to each of the following for your record-setting Duck Sales that made our event so much fun: Evan Crane, Sophie Knauf, Melissa Hatchett, Tory Rowe, Devin Ellis, Sophie Harding, Peyton Simmons, Ethan Craighead-Dankenbring, Cody Craighead-Dankenbring, Anna Whitney, Aiden Whitney, Lachlan Humphrey, Anna Howard and Marie Howard. Thank you to Denver City Councilwoman Peggy Lehmann and her staff that work so hard to produce a fantastic event that benefits Slavens! Thank you to our parent volunteers for making sure that the race went smoothly: Sam & Bill Strong, Sylvie Fambrini, Larry Claxton, Jean Friedberg, Sabra Knauf, Megan Campbell, and David Howard. Lots of Slavens Ducks won great prizes at the Derby and we look forward to doing it again next year! Quack! Annie Humphrey and Jane Howard

Traffic Issues - Safety First! - We have asked for additional patrols during our drop-off and pick-up times. Please remember the safety of our children comes first and obey all traffic laws (violators will be ticketed):
   - No double parking
   - No parking at any time in passenger loading zones
   - Do not drop your children off in the middle of the street
   - No Parking in the bus zone
   - No drop off or pick up in the staff parking lot
   - Please treat each other with kindness and consideration.

At The MACC, We Are Proud To Feature The Wolf Theatre Academy - one of Denver's most professional theatre experiences for young performers which offers classes in acting, creative dramatics, beginning dramatics, audition techniques and performance; and the Art Academy - which features youth summer classes where students flourish in a relaxed, nurturing and creative environment under the supervision of professional visual artists who are also experienced educators. If you would like more information on either of these academies, please feel free to contact me or visit www.maccjcc.org.

Grades 1-5 Art Classes to participate in "Let's Say Thanks" card drive - parent help is needed with submission forms. The 2008 Democratic National Convention Host Committee and Xerox Corporation are looking for young artists from Denver Metro schools to submit a postcard design for upcoming "Let's Say Thanks" card drives. Let's Say Thanks is a national campaign aimed at saying "thank you" to U.S. troops stationed overseas. Winning artwork will be featured on postcards used for the drives around the convention, Aug. 25 - 28, 2008. All students in grades 1-5 will create original artwork in Ms. Biermann's art class- anything from patriotic themes to local and regional landmarks - for use on postcards signed by the public and delivered to troops stationed abroad. Artwork will be judged and featured on the Denver 2008 Convention Host Committee's web site at www.DenverConvention2008.com and on www.LetsSayThanks.com where people can select their favorite design and write a personalized message to troops. A submission form must be completed in order for your child to participate. Please fill out the attached submission form and return to Ms. Biermann (your child can bring it to art class, or you can put it in Ms. Biermann's mailbox) by May 16th.

Spring is here, so you know what that means…Time to start thinking about school supplies for next year! Our annual school supply sale is a great way to: Get your child the exact supplies the teachers request; Save time, save money, and avoid the hassle of shopping (how many kids do you have?); Raise money for Slavens. Look for your order form next week. We are also looking for volunteers to help sort, deliver and package the supplies this summer. Most of the work will be done the last week in July and first week of August. If you can help, contact Amy Hicks amybhicks@yahoo.com or Sherry Fitzpatrick sherry.fitzpatrick@verizonbusiness.com
